Taman Safari Indonesia welcomes four rare Sumatran tiger cubs

Taman Safari Indonesia II Prigen in Pasuruan District, East Java Province, has introduced four Sumatran tiger cubs born in March, marking a breeding success for one of the world's most endangered big cat species and supporting conservation efforts to boost its declining population.

The four cubs were born on March 23, 2026, at Taman Safari Indonesia II Prigen to Praja, a male tiger, and Dini, a female tiger, the park said

The birth was particularly significant because it marked Dini's second successful litter after she gave birth to two Sumatran tiger cubs, Isyana and Aura, on May 4, 2021, the park's Vice President of Life Sciences Bongot Huaso Mulia said.

The litter consists of three males and one female.

Mulia said Sumatran tigers are among the most difficult species to breed in captivity because of their highly selective reproductive behavior and risks of injury, trauma, or death during the pairing process.

Conservation institutions also face challenges in ensuring newborn cubs survive and develop into healthy adults, requiring intensive monitoring and long-term care.

The birth of four cubs in a single litter is above average, he said, as Sumatran tigers typically give birth to two cubs at a time.

According to Mulia, the breeding success resulted from careful identification of the female's fertile period, close monitoring of mating, veterinary support, and preparation of a safe and comfortable birthing enclosure.

"We continue to strengthen our breeding program and aim for at least one birth each year," he said.

Taman Safari Indonesia currently houses 24 Sumatran tigers, all maintained exclusively for conservation purposes rather than commercial use, Mulia said.

The species is classified as critically endangered and remains under threat in the wild.

Indonesia is home to the remaining population of Sumatran tigers, which face increasing threats from habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict.

Conservation groups estimate that fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers remain in the wild.
