Real Madrid presidential candidate in talks with Jurgen Klopp

The world of football never truly sleeps, and even during a quiet mid-season week, a story has emerged from Real Madrid that will raise more than a few eyebrows particularly among Liverpool fans.

Real Madrid find themselves in the middle of a presidential election saga – and Klopp’s name has just been dropped right into the middle of it.

Florentino Perez, who has held the presidency of the Spanish giants for the best part of two decades, stunned the footballing world this week by calling a sudden snap election for the club’s presidency.

The announcement caught his most prominent challenger, Alicante-born businessman Enrique Riquelme, completely off guard – reportedly finding out at an airport in Panama before flying to Mexico, where his energy company Cox Energy had just completed a staggering $4.2 billion deal.

Riquelme has since rushed back to Madrid to rally potential allies ahead of a tight deadline. Candidates have just ten days to assemble a financial guarantee of 187 million euros simply to get on the ballot.

But here is where it gets interesting for Liverpool fans. According to Spanish outlet El Confidencial, Riquelme has held meetings in recent months with the entourage of Jurgen Klopp – who has been serving as Global Director of Football at Red Bull since departing Anfield in 2024.

Riquelme reportedly views Klopp as his marquee managerial appointment should he win the presidency.  An “affable and successful” profile, specifically described as the anti-Mourinho, a deliberate contrast to Florentino’s reported preference for the Portuguese manager.

Klopp’s camp has not formally responded, according to the report, with the German set to return to the UK later this May. But the groundwork, it seems, had already been quietly laid.

Riquelme still has to clear the first and biggest hurdle: actually making it onto the ballot and convincing club members to back his vision over the tried-and-tested Perez model.

Until then, Klopp’s name will hover in the background. Whether it ever progresses beyond that is another matter entirely, but one thing is clear: as long as Klopp is unattached to a dugout, he will remain the dream ticket for any ambitious club project.
