Arsenal receive Julian Alvarez transfer boost as rivals consider deal impossible
Barcelona have conceded that a deal for Arsenal target Julian Alvarez is impossible unless Atletico Madrid significantly drop their £90million asking price. Alvarez, 26, has long been Barca's top target to replace Robert Lewandowski, who recently confirmed that he'll be leaving the Camp Nou.
The ex-Manchester City star has enjoyed two prolific seasons with Atletico, scoring 49 goals and providing 17 assists in 106 appearances. Alvarez helped knock Barcelona out of both the Copa del Rey and Champions League this season, although they've gone trophyless for another year.
Barca, meanwhile, have won five trophies in the past two seasons and Hansi Flick wants a striker who can end their long wait to win European silverware. But after learning of Alvarez's price tag, the La Liga champions have turned to another target in a boost to Arsenal's chances.
According to Catalan outlet Sport, Barcelona have shifted their focus to Chelsea forward Joao Pedro as a cheaper alternative to Alvarez. Atletico are demanding around £90m for the Argentine, who they paid £82 to sign from City in 2024.
Paris Saint-Germain have also joined the race for Alvarez which is less positive news for Arsenal. Despite welcoming three new forwards last summer, the Gunners want to refresh their attack again this year.
Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus are all set to be made available when the transfer window opens, despite still having the chance to fire Arsenal to both the Premier League title and the Gunners' first ever Champions League crown. Alvarez scored a penalty against Arsenal when they faced Atletico in the semi-finals of the competition.
In March, the 26-year-old refused to confirm if he'd still be an Atletico player come next season. "Maybe yes, maybe no, you never know," Alvarez said. "I'm very happy here. It's a question that keeps coming up, but I'm happy.
"I'm focused on the day-to-day, working to improve and give my all. I never said anything bad about the club. I'm very grateful. The people showed me their affection, and I'm very happy."
Alvarez has been out injured since the Arsenal tie but could return for Atletico's final game of the season away to Villarreal on Sunday. Then he'll be off to the World Cup, where he'll hope to successfully defend the title with Argentina.
