Liverpool defender officially leaves club for Barcelona
Liverpool are now halfway through the January transfer window, yet there remains little indication that the club will strengthen the squad this month.
Injuries have disrupted the Reds’ campaign at various points this season, but that has not prompted movement in the market so far. Conor Bradley’s season-ending injury sustained against Arsenal has brought the need for potential reinforcements into sharper focus.
However, head coach Arne Slot appears content with the options currently at his disposal. Marc Guehi has been linked with a move to Anfield, but the Crystal Palace defender now looks set to join a different Premier League club before the end of the window.
Guehi recently entered the final six months of his contract at Selhurst Park, with Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool previously interested in securing his signature on a free transfer.
Man City have agreed a £20m deal to sign Crystal Palace captain Guehi. The 25-year-old England centre-back became a target after injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias.
Guehi led Palace to their first major trophy, the FA Cup, with a win over City in May, and also lifted the Community Shield against Liverpool earlier this season.
Liverpool FC Women have been active in strengthening their squad, having already signed Norwegian forward Anna Josendal from Hammarby IF.
However, Emilia Szymczak’s season-long loan from FC Barcelona has now concluded. Since joining Barcelona in 2023, Szymczak mainly played for the B team, with appearances at senior level in the Copa Catalunya and pre-season.
She made just one appearance for the Reds due to a shoulder injury. A club statement read: “Emilia Szymczak’s loan spell with Liverpool FC Women has concluded.
“The defender linked up with the Reds last September on an initial season-long basis from FC Barcelona. Szymczak, who made one appearance during the first half of the campaign, has now been recalled to her parent club after suffering a shoulder injury, which required surgery, while on international duty with Poland in December. Everyone at LFC Women wishes Emilia the best of luck for the future.”
