McConnell Takes Rare Stance Against MAGA
Mitch McConnell previously expressed concerns about President Donald Trump’s understanding of the Constitution, and recently confronted Trump’s challenges to Congress’s constitutional responsibilities. Some now believe McConnell is taking what may be his last stand in opposition to Trump’s influence over the Republican Party. Recently, McConnell voted against several Trump nominees, including Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
Despite a Republican majority in the Senate, McConnell’s dissent has largely gone unheeded, with limited support from colleagues. He argued that the Senate’s role in providing advice and consent is not optional.
McConnell said, “The Senate’s power of advice and consent is not an option; it is an obligation, and one we cannot pretend to misunderstand.”
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) said, “Nobody has been more of an anvil around the ankle of Republicans than Mitch McConnell.”
McConnell’s communication strategy has shifted towards speeches and news releases, avoiding direct interactions with the media. Trump claimed, “He’s lost his power. And it’s affected his vote.”
Some Republican senators have expressed relief at McConnell’s reduced role, viewing him as a hindrance to the party’s agenda. Senate Majority Leader John Thune emphasized the importance of collaborating with the president.
Thune said, “We have a job to do here and we have a mandate from the American people, and that is to work on implementing the agenda that the president and a lot of our senators, Republican candidates, ran on.”
